- SKKU Reached The Top Level in Korea for Main Research Businesses in 2016
- SKKU has been recognized as a university which has received the largest research fund in 2016. 10 research centers in SKKU have been selected for the mid-large size research project from the first half of 2016, with financial support of around ₩3800 million won. 107 researchers of SKKU were selected for RF (Research Fellow) Business which is designed to cultivate researchers of the next generation, by providing funds of ₩50 million won to each doctorate researcher. Also, SKKU placed No.1 in the second half of 2016 for the Korea Basic Science Support Business (Foreign Researcher Sector) out of 17 nominated researchers. Furthermore, not only did SKKU show its outstanding results in the 2016 Global Ph.D. Fellowship, where 30 researchers were selected and placed No.1 in private universities in Korea; but also, ranked at No.1 in the nation for ‘Creative Convergence Research Business for Undergraduate Students’ with 14 selected students. The Vice-President of SKKU, Ji Beom YOO said “SKKU’s outstanding performance is the result of cooperation from all members in our university.This index shows that SKKU is stepping forward toward its VISION 2020 with aims to becoming a world top 50 in research ability. We will continuously give our best support in order to accomplish our goal as a research-oriented university in the world.”

- Suwon City named a road after SKKU
- Suwon City assigned the honored name “Sungdae-ro” to the road which is located around 1600m of SKKU’s Natural Science Campus and the botanical garden. The honor can be given under special circumstances such as corporation installation and international exchanges. SKKU requested to receive the road name last October. The Committee of Road Name Address reviewed the request and decided to give the name due to recognizing SKKU’s contribution to the city as a landmark of local society; as well as the positive effect the university has had for raising the brand value of Suwon City. According to the Road Name Address Act, “Sungdae-ro” will be used in conjunction with the legal road name (Ilwol-ro, Yuljun-ro) for 5 years, which can be extended after a review from the committee. - SKKU University for Creative Korea held the ‘Sungkyun C-School Intensive Program’
- Talent Cultivation Business Unit of Creative Informatics based on Convergence (Head: Dong Ryeol SHIN), which is a part of SKKU’s ‘University Creative for Korea Project’ held the ‘Sungkyun C-School Intensive Program’ at Business Hall Creative Design Studio. This event was held 5 times between September to November, with sponsorship by the Center of Higher Education Innovation (Head: Sang Hoon BAE). Sungkyun C-School Intensive Program is a short-term intensive extracurricular program for developing SW capability, which is easy and fun for all students even for non-majors of Software. 3 courses were available on the program; ‘Processing’ course on data visualization trough processing (for beginners), ‘Creative Models and Realization’ course on short-term SW capability development by using Lego Mind Storm EV3 which is a Robot Brick, and ‘Programming Media’ course on problem solving capability development by using Little Bits, an electronic coding kit. Field experts including Jong In LEE (Interaction Designer), Hyung Woong KANG (President of Handson Tech), Sang Hyung PARK (President of Doguin) gave lectures and students had the opportunity to practice programming and take an electronic coding module over a short period of time. In order to activate regional networks, Sungkyun C-School Intensive Program was opened to all high schools belonging to the JungBu District Office of Education, with 28 students from 10 high schools participating. High school students worked together with undergraduate students and participated in practical training. A Certificate of Participation was also given to students. Yeon Woo KIM (Hwan Il High School, 2nd Grade) said “It was impressive to realize my idea through new and practical tools such as ‘Little Bits’. I will challenge myself more while holding onto my precious ideas.”

- Prof. Jun Young KIM appointed as the 6th Chairperson of the NRC
- Professor. Jun Young KIM(Ph.D., Department of Economics) was appointed as the 6th Chairperson of the National Research Council for Economics Humanities and Social Sciences (NRC) on October 25th. On the Same day, the new chairperson delivered a speech at the inauguration ceremony, which was held at the Gangbuk Smart Work Center. He stated, “In these difficult times, the NRC will galvanize communications and exchange in order to lead invigorating research to connect with the citizens and act as the fountain of national policies.” in his speech. NRC is a public institution run by the office of the Prime Minister. It was established in 2005, as a result of the integration of 2 research councils in the field of economics, humanities and social sciences.

- SKKU Ranked as No.3 University in Korea by US News & World Report
- SKKU ranked 3rd on US News & World Report’s Best Global Universities in Korea. The US News & World Report evaluated around 1000 universities in 65 countries based on the performances of 12 indexes, including reputation of research performance, joint research, number of dissertations used for top 1% citation, and so on. Universities in the USA and UK were placed mostly in he top 10; Harvard (1st), MIT (2nd), Stanford University (3rd), Oxford University (6th), Cambridge University (7th).

- 2016 Fall Semester Woosuk-Jungho Scholarship Conferment Ceremony
- <2016 Fall Semester Woosuk-Jungho Scholarship Conferment Ceremony> The College of Economics (Dean: Joon Mo CHO) held the Woosuk-Jungho Scholarship Conferment Ceremony on Oct 7th (Fri) at Dasan Economics Hall, Room #32211. Through the evaluation of the Woosuk-Jungho Scholarship Committee, 20 students were finally selected; 14 students from the College of Economics and 6 students from the School of Business. All of the conferrers who received scholarships were considered as excellent students who have remarkable academic grades, have served as models for others through their upright conduct, and are expected to become pillars for the development of the country. The Woosuk-Jungho Scholarship was established by alumni Woosuk Jungho (Economics ’58); the President of Hwashin Co., Ltd., (2012 to present). 121 students received this scholarship which amounts to 490 million won.

- The President of Peking University will visit SKKU
- □ The President of Peking University will visit SKKU to have a meeting with our president on Oct 14th. This visit is planned in order to find SKKU’s values which have developed rapidly in many fields including education, research, industrial cooperation, internationalization, and global status. Also, the two presidents will share their development plans and strategies. □ During the meeting, other exchange agreements besides the joint research, academic forum, graduate students exchanges which are already conducted, are expected to develop. □ Peking University is one of the top institutes in Asia. SKKU and Peking University recently held the 3rd Korea-China Academic Forum at Peking University's Beijing Campus on Sep 7th ~ 8th and bilateral ties between the two universities are expected to strengthen through this meeting.

- Prof. Kwan Min LEE (Interaction Science) to give Closing Speech at the World Usability Congress
- The World Usability Congress, the world’s foremost authority in the field of usability, service design, and user experience, will be held in Graz, Austria on Oct 18th ~19th. Many world-renowned companies including Google, BMW, Microsoft, NASA, Volvo, and Lego will participate and discuss themes such as; smart phones, virtual reality, recent technology regarding IoT, and more. Russ Wilson, a partner and design director of Google, and Prof. Kwan Min LEE of the Department of Interaction Science are especially invited to give speeches at the opening and closing ceremonies. The subject which Prof. LEE will present is: “Psychology and Design of Human Technology Interaction”. He will also attend the 1st World Undergrad UX Competition as a judge, and evaluate participants to select the winner of the event. Prof. LEE is the only Asian speaker and judge who has been invited by the association.

- 10th Anniversary Academic Forum of Graduate School of Management of Technology
- The Graduate School of Management of Technology was founded in 2006, and an academic forum was held to celebrate its 10th anniversary on Oct. 8th (Sat), with many participants including freshmen students, professors, and alumni. The students were divided into two groups and participated in discussions about “Tasks for R&D innovation in the country”. This year is the first time that the Graduate School of Management of Technology has admitted freshman students, and they are now accepting new applicants for admission in 2017.
