This course cultivates and supports research partnerships between our undergraduates and faculty. It offers the chance to work on cutting edge research—whether you join established research projects or pursue your own ideas. Undergraduates participate in each phase of standard research activity: developing research plans, writing proposals, conducting research, analyzing data and presenting research results in oral and written form. Projects can last for an entire semester, and many continue for a year or more. SKKU students use their CGS(Creative Group Study) experiences to become familiar with the faculty, learn about potential majors, and investigate areas of interest. They gain practical skills and knowledge they eventually apply to careers after graduation or as graduate students.

This course is higher level applied course and intended for senior students. This course is designed to maximize the collaboration between the school of economics and industry. The course will focus on solving real-world problems through projects. The course will be run by collaboration of professor and sponsoring company’ mentors. Following is special aspects of the course. 1. The class (10 students) will make 3 teams. Team will perform each of 3 projects given by sponsoring company. 2. Professor will give lectures on financial economics subjects related to projects during the class. Students will discuss their progress on projects. 3. There will be mid-term presentation during students’ second meeting with mentors. 4. There will be final presentation in the last week of semester. 5. Only for students who completed the course will be awarded sponsoring company’s internship certificate. However, this is not related to any full-time job offer indication. 6. Students will get grade based on grading guideline of pass/fail 7. Registration of the Course - Only students with permission from the professor can register this course. - Students who completed financial economics course (or passed internationally recognized exams such as CFA (level 1 and above) and FRM), statistics and possess minimum basic computer programming skill can apply for interview. - Interview will be held before semester. ISS3157 Behavioral Economics and the Economics of Altruism 3 6 Major Bachelor 1-4 English Yes
Behavioral economics is gaining widespread acceptance among contemporary economists. Motivated by models and evidence from Psychology, it considers the implications of relaxing key classical assumptions, in particular, to allow for limited willpower, bounded cognition, and other-regarding preferences. Students will get a rigorous but intuitive introduction to prominent behavioral models such as "prospect theory", "satisficing," "time-inconsistent preferences", and "fairness". We will compare these to traditional economic models, considering the evidence, particularly from lab and field experiments, while learning key principles of experimental design and analysis.
ISS3159 Understanding International Finance, the Global Economy, and Exchange Rates 3 6 Major Bachelor 1-4 English Yes
Exchange rates, foreign currency and international finance are essence in the global economy. Government repays overseas debt, companies make contracts on exporting/importing goods with foreign ones and fund managers invest clients’ money in overseas assets. All these economic activities are ultimately related to foreign exchange risk. Therefore, we will face serious economic losses without understanding international finance. This motivates us to study international finance. This course assumes that attended students have no background in finance and starts by introducing students to the foundations of financial theory. Students then learn the foundations of international finance focusing on foreign exchange rates. This course further introduces more advanced topics such as international asset pricing and currency risk management which are being actively used in the real world. In addition, students acquire skills in data analysis using Excel with Visual Basic for Applications. This exercise is very useful for students not only to prepare for their group works in this class, but also to do empirical analysis in both academics and industry.

Law of Market & Competition is a basic collateral course for students majoring in various socio-economic studies and humanities, and will focus on the spirit of free, private market economy and core norms in its operation. Students will learn, analyse such key issues of free market as basis of market economy, constitutional control over economy related legislation, monopolization, collusion, merger and acquisition, unfair business practices, special issues of business group and small firm. Class will adopt various educational method such as lecture, socratic and law & economy approach. Students will also be required to practical case studies on selected core issues in the regulation of present market and businesses in the Republic.

This course aims to study statistical and econometric techniques that are the basis for economic data analysis. We discuss linear regression, maximum likelihood estimation (MLE), general rate estimation (GMM), etc., which are widely used in economic data analysis, and introduce LASSO and Principal Component Analysis related to high dimensional data. Moreover, We learn how to use the R program and estimate and test a variety of econometric models using real economic data.

This course develops the theoretical capacity required to interpret the results of empirical analysis using data. Also, this course is divided into two parts. First, theoretical microscopy focuses on analyzing the issues of microeconomics and deriving interpretations and policy implications. In Managerial economics, the other part of applied microeconomics, we analyze corporate strategies to devise efficient corporate organization and management methods. Additionally, we need to build the necessary theoretical skills to design various mechanisms for incentives such as compensation for wages and non-wage within the organization.

In this course, students will learn how the key variables of macro economy are determined and related with such as GDP, interest rate, inflation and unemployment rate. In addition, we study various foreign balances, international capital flows and exchange rates, which are important for understanding the characteristics of the open economy like Korea. Furthermore, we studies the role and effects of macroeconomic policy such as fiscal policy and monetary Policy on the theoretical foundation to understand and predict economic fluctuations in the short term and economic growth in the long term.The lessons for each subject are conducted in parallel with theoretical learning and analysis using real cases and data.
