Joint Seminar Held by Keio University in Japan and SKKU Global Economics Department
In January, students from our Global Economics Department visited Keio University in Tokyo, Japan, to participate in an international academic conference. This conference, organized jointly by our university and Keio University, was a Research Symposium where students from both countries had the opportunity to build international networks and discuss topics related to economics.
The annual international academic conference held by our university aims to expand the international exchange network between economics major students from Korea and Japan and to share understanding of global economic issues.
A total of 12 students from our university participated, 8 students from Keio University also attended. Each student presented their research topic and engaged in discussions to provide feedback on each other's research. Students have been preparing for this international academic conference since last October, including preparing presentations and writing short papers. Through feedback from professors, including the department chair, they conducted in-depth learning of analytical methodologies learned in the curriculum to apply them to real-world economic analysis.
Participation in such international academic conferences is expected to expand the interest in economics research and exchange networks for both SKKU and Keio students. One student who participated in the conference said, "As I hope to pursue graduate studies, participating in the academic conference and conducting research and presenting in English in front of many people gave me a taste of graduate school life in advance." They added, "Through preparing for this symposium, I had the opportunity to think about what research I would like to pursue in graduate school and what direction I should take in my research.
Another student mentioned, "Keio students presented many topics that were different from those presented by Korean students." They added, "Topics such as soft power and the shipping industry, which Korean students may not have shown interest in, were also covered, so through this exchange, it seems that we were able to broaden our perspectives."
In the future, the Global Economics Department plans to continue organizing research symposiums to broaden students' perspectives and provide opportunities for academic achievement at the undergraduate level.
