- The Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Research and Innovation at the University of Oxford visited SKKU
- Dr. Ian Walmsley, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Research and Innovation at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, visited Sungkyunkwan University on January 22nd. The visit began with a meeting with the Executive Vice President of Sungkyunkwan University at the Natural Sciences Campus. Prof. Walmsley had a tour of the N center and then visited Sungkyunkwan’s old campus at the Humanities and Social Science Campus. After, he met SKKU’s President Chung, Kyu Sang and discussed possible future opportunities for collaboration between the two universities. Since Prof. Walmsley is responsible for the oversight of Oxford’s research and policies, research collaboration was discussed primarily along with concrete implementation plans including graduate student exchange, a short-term student lab internship program, and a summer exchange program. President Chung said that he hoped this visit will trigger active research collaboration with Oxford and lead to actual academic exchange including student exchange, joint curriculums, and dual degree programs. The University of Oxford is a prestigious institution and the oldest English-speaking university in the world. It has ranked 2nd and 6th in Times Higher Education and QS World University Rankings, respectfully. It has also produced 26 Nobel Prize winners, 30 world leaders including Bill Clinton and Aung San Suu Kyi, and 26 British Prime Ministers including Tony Blair and David Cameron.

- Practical Leadership by Prof. Lee Jung Hoon
- Going inside the classes: 'Practical Leadership' One of the requirements for graduation is taking a course from the Leadership Category where ‘Theoretical Leadership’ and ‘Practical Leadership’ are included in it. ‘Practical Leadership’ enhances your understanding of the leadership and gives you a chance to actually practice it. Depending on major of the Professor, what you learn in the course might differ a little bit. For Prof. Lee, Jung Hoon’s Practical Leadership course, which I will be introducing today, he focuses on the leadership regarding business administration, his major. Now, let’s take a look into Prof. Lee’s Practical Leadership course. What do you do in Class? In Prof. Lee’s course, textbooks are not required. Instead, before you go to class, you should go to icampus and print out the course plan which is uploaded every week. This one-semester course is divided into two parts by the mid-term exam. Before the mid-term, we study the definition of leadership and traits of leaders. Around 2nd or 3rd week, the professor asks you to choose a leader who could be your role model and then to read a book about the person. This is related to not only the one-minute speech which you will be doing later about a role model, but also the assignment after the mid-term, so be prepared. After the mid-term, you will learn what leaders do and what different types of leaderships are. Meanwhile, preparation for the team presentation, which will take place a week before the final, will start. The first class is done like it is always done. But at the second class, the Professor will give students time for preparation for team presentation. So use that time wisely. At every class the professor gives out a questionnaire, and it gives you time to ponder about yourself and what type of leadership that suits you. Before starting the second class, you will always watch a short five-minute long video which is mostly about a leader or leadership taken from famous movies. This makes the beginning of the class more interesting. How is grading done? The grade is evaluated by the mid-term, the final, personal assignment and team presentation. Considering that the professor tells students to attend the classes even if you are late, it seems that the attendance is quite important despite the fact it only comprises of a small part of the total grade. The mid-term and the finals consists of multiple choice and short answer questions. Most of them are from the course plan but some of them are not. However, you do not have to worry about it since even the questions that are not from the course plan are all mentioned by the professor during the class, making it not so difficult to figure out. The personal assignment is, as it is already mentioned above, about the role model that you have chosen. It is reading a book about the role model’s life or leadership and writing an essay that combines the role model and what you have learned about the leadership theory. After the mid-term comes the assignment, but because the due date is far away, you won’t feel much pressured. The team presentation which will take place a week before the mid-term is to elect a leader from your own group and do a presentation about the leader in relation to the things you’ve learned about leadership in the course. Instead of setting another time to meet, it would be less of the burden to utilize the time given at the second class for preparing the team presentation. The evaluation for the team presentation is conducted by both professor and students. After listening to presentations, students give score to other teams on team presentation evaluation paper. The result will be announced on the notice board at icampus after the finals. What are the Pros and Cons? The good thing about the course is that it is not much of a burden. As it is mentioned above, in cases of both personal assignment and team presentation, the professor cares for students. So it would not be so stressful for students. It would almost certainly not overlap with other courses’ assignments and presentation, and even if it does, it wouldn’t be so hard to complete. The questionnaire given at every class is especially helpful. The content of the questionnaire is simple, but if you answer the questions earnestly, you will comprehend your own traits and find the right type of leadership for you. The downside is that it is a 9 a.m. class, so it is painful for students who can’t wake up early. But even with that, there aren’t that many people late or absent. So you will have to be an early bird and not be absent. Tips for students! The mid-term covers a narrow range. Therefore, when preparing for the mid-term, you have to memorize everything from the range. It is because since the range is so narrow, the questions are from almost every part. Especially to answer the short-answer questions, you have to know everything thoroughly. On the other hand, the finals cover a wide range. So you will have to study for the final in advance. Because it covers a wider range than the mid-term, questions do not go into detailed as the mid-term, but it is always good to study thoroughly to answer the short-answer questions. And in team presentation, the leader will be given extra one point, so take it into account.

- SKKU makes big gain, provincial national universities take a favorable turn… in BK21 Plus interim evaluation
- It has been reported that according to the interim evaluation, results for Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) and key regional national universities have improved significantly. On Dec. 23, Ministry of education and National Research Foundation of Korea announced the preliminary results of the interim evaluation on Brain Korea 21 Plus (BK21+)s Plan. Especially, unlike the first rounds of evaluation for BK21+ which was conducted in Aug. 2013, each university showed big differences and were greatly divided in the results. In assessing each universities’ total number of selected project teams during the BK21+ interim evaluation, Seoul National University(SNU) showed a steady and strong performance (35 ->40), while the most remarkable result was SKKU where 10 were added to the already 21, making total of 31. Thanks to this, the overall ranking of SKKU, based on the sum of selected project teams rose from 7th to 2nd place. Among provincial national universities, Chungnam National University (CNU) leapt from 12th to 7th, almost doubling its number from 12 to 23. Key provincial national universities such as Pusan National University(PNU) (total number 31, 2nd), Kyungpook National University(KNU) (total number 24, 6th), Chungnam National University (CNU) (total numer 23, 7th), Chonnam National University (JNU) (total number 21, 8th), and Chonbuk National University(JBNU) (total number 17, 10th) have shown good results, putting themselves in the top ten. On the other hand, Korea University (KU) which was second in 2013 with 29, shrank to 27, placing it at 5th after PNU (total number 31) and Yonsei University (YU) (total number 28). Meanwhile, to make the interim evaluations more impartial, the Ministry of Education conducted this Interim Evaluation in two stages. A total of 546 project teams were selected by having the top 50% of existing teams, 277 teams, retaining their status, 24 teams eliminated due to their significantly low assessment scores of less than 60% and 269 teams selected as Preliminary Selectee Project Teams, selected out of the 723 projects teams made up of the existing lower 50% teams and new entries. Through this process a total of 23.3% were replaced by 127 competitive new entries. More specifically 14.2%, 38 project teams, of large-scale and 31.9%, 89 project teams, of small-scale were changed. The Ministry of Education plans to conduct site inspections for the Preliminary Selectee Project Teams until Jan. 2016, and if they spot project teams of false or deliberately miswritten information, those project teams will be eliminated. Huh Jung, Head of the Talent Development Promotion Team in National Research Foundation of Korea, said “At the interim evaluation, budgets were reassessed even for the existing project teams.” Huh also added, “Exact budget for each university and business project will be announced on Feb. 2016, when confirmation notice is placed, after the end of the site inspections.” In addition, the Ministry of Education will continuously conduct a consultation based annual inspection beyond 2016, to support the project teams’ long term vision development, and encourage enhancement in the quality and outcome of the study and research. - President Chung's New Year's Address
- Respectfully to all in Sungkyunkwan University, With the duty of the 20th presidency, call upon by all to undertake, has stoled its first year by and is gone, we are now greeting the new year of 2016, 丙申年(Byungshin Nyun), with great anticipation and hope. This year is called the year of the red monkey where it is said that the elements of yang, fire and the color red culminate and enables all things to be executed with a forward-looking and proactive outcome. As we enter such a vibrant new year, I sincerely wish for all in Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) to have all their endearing goals and hopes bear fruit for this year. As the university celebrates its 618th anniversary in the new year, SKKU is ceaselessly creating values derived from ‘the new value of the old’, by bringing together in harmony, tradition and cutting-edge field of studies, and, with the active support by our foundation, Samsung Corporation, we continue to proceed with pioneering and outstanding university innovation. Through these efforts, SW Centered University Support Program, Grand ICT Research Center Program, Self-Curing Environmental Concrete Research Center and more, have been selected as major government projects last year. Especially with the Brain Korea 21+ Project (BK21+) which is the core foundation for graduate school education and a research centered university, we have procured an outstanding 31 projects. Also we have repeatedly demonstrated unprecedented and spectacular achievements like becoming the NO. 1 private university in Korea at the Joong-Ang Daily University Rankings for the 3rd consecutive year, marking NO. 1. on the National Consumer Satisfaction Index (NCSI) for the 9th consecutive year, and completing the construction of the N Center, the world’s top level basic science research facility, and more. In addition, we have risen the ranks in the QS World Rankings to 118, while demonstrating to be the finest private university in Korea according to ‘Times Higher Education (THE) World Rankings’ and ‘US News & World Report’s Global Universities Rankings’. This is especially felt by the active willing gestures for international cooperation from the world’s prestigious universities abroad. Such outstanding achievements in the midst of adversity was only made possible by the passionate participation and selfless support of the faculty, administrative staff, the foundation, the students and 210 thousand alumni’s heart warming affection for the university, in order to propel beyond being the best university in Korea to become a truly global leading university. So I would like to take this opportunity to express, from the bottom of my heart, my admiration and gratitude to each and everyone of you. People of SKKU! This year, we also are expecting an acceleration of change in the environment surrounding the university. The threats that we encounter are diverse and complex, such as the heated global competition between universities, the advent of a new education trend based on technological innovation, the growing demand from students and corporations as a comsumer and more. However, these threats in my view are no different from the opportunity that will further propel our university as we take on this new challenge. For those who are prepared there can be no threats but opportunities. One year ago when I was appointed to the presidency, I referred to you a quote from the Analects of Confucius, the chapter of Jaro (子路), “If you truthfully employ me, I will lay the foundations in one year and yield profits in three.“(子曰 苟有用我者, 期月而己可也, 三年有成). With this in mind I have concentrated to solidify the university, in my first year, based on the great legacy laid by my predecessors before me. And now for the next three years, in order to create a truly global leading university, we will be moving forward with the ‘New Challenge Project’ as follows: One, we will strengthen soft-wear(SW) education & fusion learning Two, we will concentrate and strengthen research by establishing ‘Research Troika’ and more Three, we will do our utmost to raise ‘Global Pride’ by expanding ‘Global Alliances’ Four, we will greatly expand industry-university cooperation through the ‘SKKU Enterprise Foundation’ and more Five. we will exalt pride of being the finest university, through ‘Innovation in Management’ and ‘Combined Leadership’ We hope that all of you will actively participate and show your support for our university’s new challenge. The dream that all in SKKU dreams with one heart and one mind, will always come true. Again I’d like to express my gratitude for the dedication and appreciation that all have shown last year, and wish for a year filled with a future that holds great achievements and happiness for all in SKKU. January 11th President of Sungkyunkwan University CHUNG KYU SANG

- Selecting Your Major 2016
- Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU)’s University College was established from 2005 and has been recruiting students at a college unit basis since. For a year, students spend time strengthening their knowledge in liberal arts and basic studies, while in the same time get the chance to find the major that suites their aptitude. The college units are divided into 5 fields: liberal arts, social sciences, science, communication and information engineering and lastly, engineering. The liberal arts unit consists of College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy and College of Liberal Arts; the social science unit consists of College of Social Sciences and College of Economics; the science unit consists of College of Science and College of Biotechnology and Bioengineering; the communication and information engineering unit consists of College of Information and Communication Engineering; the engineering unit consists of College of Engineering, and each college is also broken down into finer units of majors. However, ‘Major pre-selected students’ who have been already accepted will automatically be allocated to their majors, while student who signed on( or will sign on) a leave of absence (normal or military ) after the 2 semesters are also obliged to enter the process . The first period for department application (Dec. 7. 2015 10:00 A.M. to Dec. 10. 2015 06:00 P.M.) has already ended. After Grade Confirmation of the second semester, a second (and alteration) period will open. Students can apply to college of science, college of engineering and college of information and communication engineering from Jan. 18. 2016 10:00 A.M. to Jan. 20. 2016 06:00 P.M. Liberal arts and social sciences students can have alterations from Jan. 20. 2016 10:00 A.M. to Jan. 21. 2016 06:00 P.M. The application procedure is described as follows: GLS->Application/Graduation Requirements Management-> Application for department-> Application for department (College Unit) ->Select College Unit Preference -> Apply Students should select all majors in their colleges by ranking them based on their own preference. After application students can check what their standing is for each major. Students’ standings are decided by their GPA. In the first department selection period only GPA from the spring semester was considered, but in the second department application period the GPA from the fall semester is included. Students’ standing can change from the first department application period, so it is advised that students check their status again at the last application (alteration) period. The grade used in the department application is an average of all grades acquired from the areas of ‘Writing and Communication’, ‘Global Culture’, ‘Fundamental of Thinking’ and required core courses from each department. When a student has retaken a course, both the old and new one will be included. The results will be announced on Jan. 26. 2016 (Tue), and students’ status will be updated and change on Mar. 1. 2016., to their allocated departments. For those who are going through hard decisions, the university has provided interviews for six students who have already chosen their departments. We hope this will help students in their decisions. ■ Dept. of Library and information Science Jung, Ye Won (Entered in 2014) Q1. Please introduce yourself and your department. I am Jung, Ye Won. I am majoring in Library and information Science. I started studying from 2014. Q2. Why did you choose your department? I was divided over two majors when I was selecting my department. I knew I was more interested in social sciences than language studies, so this department was more attractive since it issues a second level Librarian certificate and the studies included big data.analysis. Q3. What is special about the department? What are the pros and cons? And to who do you recommend this department? After I started studying, I realized it is completely different from what I have vaguely thought it would be. It is hard to mention the pros and cons since the best way is to experience it first-hand. But I can come up with two good things I can personally say about my department. First is lectures done in English and the support for ischool abroad, and the various outside lectures provided. As the SKKU library and information science department is the only one in Korea that is designated as an ischool, also as it is a related to interdisciplinary major of Data Sciences, there are an abundant amount of chances for acquiring information abroad and participating. And for cons, if I had to name one, the fact that the department can find its roots in librarian major, it is inseparable from libraries which is not that exciting. Q4. Is there anything you want to tell students who are about to make the big decision? Advice from friends and parents are always helpful, but it could be more wiser also to listen to your own voice by going on a short trip or something and then make the choice. ■ Dept. of History Kim, Jin ho (Entered in 2014) Q1. Please introduce yourself and your department. Hi. I am Kim, Jin ho. I entered Liberal Arts College in 2014 and entered department of history in 2015. Q2. Why did you choose your department? I liked Korean history since I was in middle school and high school. Maybe it was because I was able to come in contact with comics or drama’s about history more, also Korean history were my favorite subjects out of all the subjects. In highschool, from the first mock KSAT, Korean history was almost considered like a compulsory subject for me. When I was studying, internet lecture from Choi, Tae Sung who is also our alumni, was very helpful. After being accepted by SKKU through nonscheduled admission, I spent my freshmen year solely on entering Department of History, and obviously applied for that department. Q3. What is special about the department? What are the pros and cons? And to whom do you recommend this department to? We are not divided into eastern and western history like other universities. Therefore we could take various lectures to encompass both east and west. Also because top professors in their fields come and give lectures passionately in each class, you get to learn something more than just the history you know. And as a characteristic of the department, field trips are made to historic sites every spring and autumn. It is a good experience to explore the historic sites first hand, beyond just learning in the classroom. Moreover, it’s an opportunity to get closer to one another. To graduate it is required to do at least two field trips. However, a lot of seniors keep coming even after they fulfilled the requirements just for the fun. So students who like history like me or who want to know more about history can just apply without any hesitation. However there’s an obstacle which is Classical-Chinese. Due to the department’s characteristics, most lectures are done based on documents written in Classical-Chinese and you are required to translate them on your own. So for those who are not that familiar with Classical-Chinese it would be better to study it beforehand. Q4. Is there anything you want to tell students who are about to make the big decision? Foremost, I would like to say trust in your decision. You might hear that it’s not good for getting a job, some departments are better in getting a job than this, and even you might also feel that as well. However, I feel that it’s much more valuable to study what you want to study at the university which you only go once in your life. Also it isn’t worth I toiling over a major you don’t like because of getting a job. And even if you are still worried, I do not think it is a big problem, since you can always have double-major. SKKU has a great double major system, so if you use it effectively you will be able to get positive results. To sum it up, it is important to apply for what you really want. ■ Dept. of Korean Language and Literature Lee, Yun ho (Entered in 2014) Q1. Please introduce yourself and your department. Hello. I am Lee, Yun ho. I am a sophomore in the Department of Korean Language and Literature. Q2. Why did you choose your department? I had many thoughts about which department I should choose even until the department application period. I thought it would be better to choose after looking up details about each department. So I looked into each department’s curriculum. There were a lot of culture related lectures in regarding Glocal Inter-disciplinary Program in the Department of Korean Language and Literature. I choose it because I thought I will be able to learn various areas regarding culture in addition to language and literature studies. Q3. What is special about the department? What are the pros and cons? And to whom do you recommend this department to? Because I haven’t spent much time here yet, but I believe the professors are dedicated. They always try to teach us more and are friendly, so it almost feels like I’m back at high school class. Sometimes it could be hard because of assignments, team projects and exams, but I thinks it pays off. I have seen several people who choose Korean language and literature because it suited their GPA, and are having hard time. I think if your aptitude is not too against reading books and writing, applying for this major won’t be a problem. Q4. Is there anything you want to tell students who are about to make the big decision? You must have lots of worries with the department decision ahead, but the most important thing is to just first think of what you want to do and try to find your major in that direction. If you do choose to a study that doesn’t interest you, you will be less enthusiastic about it, and will have no love for your department. Choose carefully and I hope you enjoy a satisfying college learning experience. ■ Dept. of Economics Kim, You Rim (Entered in 2014) Q1. Please introduce yourself and your department. Hello. I’m Kim, You Rim from Dept. Of Economics, I entered SKKU in 2014. Q2. Why did you choose your department? When I got permission from colleges of social sciences, I hoped to go on to Dept. of public administration so that I can pursue work in the public sector. However, I got attracted to Department of Economics while I took some liberal arts classes and after having a talk with seniors of mine. In getting a job or preparing for qualifying examinations, I noticed, economics plays crucial roles. So, I decided to go on to Dept. of economics which is one of the most popular departments among students Q3. What is special about the department? What are the pros and cons? And to whom do you recommend this department? One of the features of this department is the atmosphere. Only those who get high scores during the first year of school life can have a chance to study in this department. Consequently, they study enthusiastically. Economics has many things to study, compared to others. While less team projects reduce burden of daily study, thorough review and preparation are required. One of the advantages is that classes of economics don’t have many team projects and presentation. So, students can get high score by studying alone. It’s not bothersome in setting timetable because several time slots are available for a subject. Thanks to well-organized curriculum, students can study step-by-step feeling achievement. For disadvantages, it’s hard to communicate between students because too many students are in economics. This makes students hard to have sense of belonging and grow a fondness of their own department. You can check whether you are apt to economics through taking ‘Introduction to Economics’ as course. Our department is well matched with those who can settle down to study continuously and who are familiar with mathematics. I would recommend economics to those who haven’t determined their goal yet. This is because economics would be utilized in broad fields in the future. Q4. Is there anything you want to tell students who are about to make the big decision? The point is not be carried away by what others say. Although it is significant to hear a lot of advice from seniors and friends, you must carefully contemplate and decide on what your career path will be and what your interests are. Those who are worried of their lack knowledge in economics should not fret. Everyone starts from the beginning. ■ Dept. of Political Science and Diplomacy Kwon Jin Ho (Entered in 2014) Q1. Please introduce yourself and your department. Hello, my name is Kwon, Jin Ho. I’m student president of Dept. of political science and diplomacy. Q2. Why did you choose your department? I didn’t mean to go to this department at first. During the first year of school, I thought hard about which department would best suite me. I consulted with my school mentor, took the MBTI personality type test at psychology consultation center, and talked with a senior in my club activity. With these, I discussed with my family who know me best. And finally I decided to study at this department. Q3. What is special about the department? What are the pros and cons? And to whom do you recommend this department to? Most of our class consists of presentation and discussion due to the characteristic of the department. I think this class style is the most valuable part of our department since students can learn many other things besides the knowledge part. You can practice showing your opinion in front of many people through presentation, examine your opinion through discussion, and broaden your perspective by hearing other’s opinions. According to older alumnus, this class style helped a lot to prepare for job interviews. For disadvantages, those who are not in favor of this type of class might not actively participate in class. Another characteristic is that students can easily learn the complicated and highly interdependent political atmosphere of the modern era. For instance, students will encounter questions like, ‘Analyze, in the perspective of ancient political philosophy and political ideas why citizens in democracies support dictators’, ‘Why is the approval rating for the US GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump rising in terms of comparative politics’, ‘From the international politics’ viewpoint, what position should Korea take between the United States and China which is emerging as G2’ and more. In this department, you don’t just learn archaic theory but also practical politics of current issues. Professors of our department do their best to keep neutrality. However, sometimes they inevitably show their own opinions and stances which some students might feel uncomfortable. Q4. Is there anything you want to tell students who are about to make the big decision? Politics, which has a long history and can be utilized in broadly, is a significant study covering personal and social behavior in a social structure. Here is promotion of our department: Not only politics itself has a significant meaning as a study, but also it takes superior positions in relation to other humanities and social science. Politics is a fundamental study. I think whatever one’s goal is, to achieve it, humanistic refinement should be acquired beforehand Lastly, some students merely divide all departments into two parts: commerce and non-commerce. And recklessly choose to get into commerce field to find a job easily. I would recommend not to make this mistake. Choosing one’s major is very crucial in one’s life. You will study your major at least 3 years and later you will get a job related to it. If I may exaggerate a little bit, your life would depend on what major you choose. Therefore, contemplate about yourself and choose proper major for yourself. ■ Dept. of Journalism and Mass Communication No, Hye Jin Q1. Please introduce yourself and your department. My name is No, Hye Jin. I am a sophomore in the Dept. of Journalism and Mass Communication Q2. Why did you choose your department? I wanted to enter this department from the first day I came to SKKU. It is because I wanted to become a reporter. Not only that but I was interested in learning what the role of the press is and what is a proper the press, and to learn more deeply about these I decided to this department. Q3. What is special about the department? What are the pros and cons? And to whom do you recommend this department I’m not sure if I can give you an opinion only after studying a year at my major. However, based on my experience, I don’t think I learned what I wanted to learn from my department. If someone wants to become a producer, I don’t think it would be a good choice. I would rather recommend them to learn production and direction. From the last year I spent I can say that our department is much stronger in theory rather than hands on knowledge. It could be because I took the course, but you learn a lot about ‘Communication’. So I would suggest our department is not a necessity for those who are interested in becoming a reporter, producer. Personally, I would recommend it to those who are interested in advertisement and marketing. Although I am not learning what I first intended, I am satisfied with the learning I get from our department. You have to know that “Dept. of it is Journalism and Mass Communication = team project”. Depending who it is team projects can be a virtue or a vice. In our department, in order to apply the theories learned to real life, there are many campaigns and projects related to team projects. While it might be very depending on the individual, there are many team project subjects that you can conduct without much difficulty and with interest. To summarize, students can learn, students may learn more theory than hands on experience, the department provides helpful theory. . In summary, students can learn theoretical study rather than practical one. It is always best to experience by oneself than just to be told about. I think checking each major’s curriculum or lectures before entering the major would be a good idea. I am not exactly studying what I wanted to learn at first, but I am still very satisfied with what I am learning here in Journalism and Mass communication in SKKU. Ask seniors for advice and look up what lectures there are in each majors. I hope you make your best decisions. Q4. Is there anything you want to tell students who are about to make the big decision? It’s very different with experiencing it and describing it. It would be good to check out the department courses and curriculum before deciding. Although I’m not learning the things I initially wanted to learn, I am satisfied with what the department teaches me. Try talking to the seniors around you and check out the courses and make an unregretful selection. ※ You can read detailed descriptions about each department on Notice on the college websites (http://hakbu.skku.edu/hakbu/index.jsp). Hope students find their right departments and enter departments of their liking. Ⅷ. Contact 1. Humanities Science, Social Science (Humanities and Social Sciences CAMPUS) University College Admin. - Dept. of Genetic Engineering reaches highest number of graduates entering Samsung Bioepis
- In last year’s second half recruitment cycle, Dept. of Genetic Engineering, Biotechnology and Engineering College. recorded the highest of number of successful candidates, of any one department, to Samsung Bioepis. It is an outstanding accomplishment to have 5 of the 35 recruits, bachlors and masters, coming from one department, in a single recruitment cycle. Of those recruitied for research 2 were masters and 3 were bachlors. Already being the department with the highest numbers of graduates in Samsung Bioepis, the news is casting positive light on the department’s future. As the significance of the issue on the aging society and food stuffs are recently becoming evermore prominent, so is the scale of the global bio-industry. Demand for bio-experts are increasing as domestic and foreign major companies and large pharmaceutical companies are actively investing in the bio-industry. For Samsung, they are operating the research company, Bioepis and the manufacturing company, Bio-logics. For SK, SK Chemicals which was originally one company, diversified and expanded its vaccine department into SK Chemical, its pharmacy department into SK Biopharm and its serum department into SK Plasma. For LG, they have been growing their portion of the bio business which includes Living Health, Bio Science and Chemicals. In addition Dept. of Genetic Engineering produced a number of successful candidate to the domestic major companies including Samsung Bio-logics, LG, CJ, Amore Pacific, Cell Trion, LotteChilsung and more. This trend is considered to reflect the results of a steep increase in the demand for bio-engineering expertise in the bio-industry. Prof. Oh, Jung Su from Dept. of Genetic Engineering said “As the industry of the 21st century and one of the fastest growing buisnesses, the bio-industry is seeing a great number of top level researchers coming from SKKU, and as prospect for demand on experts in bio is expected to grow the future for our students is very bright.” In addition, successful job-seeking students of the Dept. of Genetic Engineering planned a Job Aquiring Experience Presentation and held it on Dec. 11. where they shared their experience and was well received by students.
