- Graphene Oxide: Crafting a Photonic Paintbrush
- Prof. Jang Kun Song, Dr. Tianzi Shen, Dr. Seung Ho Hong of the College of Communication and Information, published research about the production of photonic crystals by narrowing spaces between Graphene Oxide particles in colloid solution and precise adjustment of photonic crystals. The research team observed a sequence of Graphene Oxide particles in Colloid by using fluorescence laser scanning microscopy, and discovered a layer was formed due to the electrical repulsive force between particles, but found that bed structures were not formed. Unlike the theories claiming that a lamellar mesophase is essential to produce photonic crystals, the team proved distinguished photonic crystals can be produced in the nematic phase. Also, they studied the ways to adjust photonic crystals and successfully demonstrated the color adjustment in them with bottom-up and Top-down technology. This means that drawing color images is possible by putting colloid in the bed structure or combining them, and the result implied that Photonic Crystals derived from 2-dimensional colloid can be applied to flexible electronic paper display, or a paint which can adjust colors. The research was funded by Samsung Science & Technology Center and the result of the study was published on Aug. 12th at Latest Research Summaries of LPG Asia Materials Online under the subject name of Graphene oxide: crafting a photonic paintbrush.

- Carbon Dioxide --> Clean Energy Conversion Technology Succeeded
- A research team led by Prof. Jong Wook Bae of SKKU successfully invented a technology of conversion 'Carbon Dioxide to Dimethyl Ether' which can be applied to Diesel Vehicles, by using a catalyst combined of Aluminum Oxide and Copper. The team explained that they were able to make an efficient combined catalyst which can react with carbon dioxide for a long time, by reacting it in the optimal temperature and humidity. This technology will add to the increased productivity of energy because it can produce clean energy from Carbon Dioxide with only a small amount of catalyst required.

- Campaign on Priority Boarding & Reserved Seats for Handicapped Students
- The Service Center for Handicapped Students of SKKU launched a new campaign on priority boarding at elevators, and reserved seats at cafeterias for handicapped students, in order to improve the quality of their student life. The center has been considering the best way to minimize the difficulties that students with disabilities might encounter, and discovered the most discomfort came from using elevators and cafeterias on campus. To resolve this problem, the center started campaigns to improve awareness. Next to elevator buttons, priority boarding stickers for people using wheelchairs are included. Reserved seats for disabled students are provided at student cafeterias on Humanities & Social Sciences Campus and Dormitory Cafeteria on Natural Sciences Campus. The poster for the campaign was also produced, designed by Won Gyung Choi (Dept. of Psychology, Webtoon artist), a volunteer for handicapped students. Eun Sun KANG, a manager of the Service Center for Handicapped Students asks able-bodied students to be more considerate of students with a disability. “By spending a lot of time with disabled students, I have realized that the reason that handicapped student feel ‘uncomfortable’ is mainly because the environment around them does not support their situations very well. I am sure every student will be happy if non-disabled students were more considerate towards disabled students. The Service Center for Handicapped Students strives to provide the best welfare to handicapped students by supporting them with their studies, campus life, employment, facilities around the school, and more. Also, the center offers various education services such as online education for improving awareness, and camps for developing the capabilities of disabled students. These kinds of programs will be available to all members in the university from 2016.
