Seminar in Honor of Professor Chong S. Hong Held
Seminar in Honor of Professor Chong S. Hong took place on June 7, 2024, at Sungkyunkwan University, Seoul. This seminar was held to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Chong S. Hong as a researcher, mentor, and academic leader. Over eighty participants, Professor Hong's former students, collaborators, colleagues, and friends, gathered for this seminar.
Since his appointment as an assistant professor at Sungkyunkwan University in March 1989, Professor Hong as been recognized by academia through active research activities and training of younger students.
Sunghyun Kim, Dean of the College delivered a congratulatory remarks, “Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to attend this seminar. I would like to express my gratitude once again to Professor Hong for his hard work in Sungkyunkwan University and academia over the past 35 years.”
Then, professor Chong S. Hong conducted a seminar on the topic "Geometry in Generalized Linear Models." The seminar began with an exploration of geometry using the Pythagorean theorem in the context of generalized linear models, which are crucial in the field of statistics. Professor Hong then proposed a novel method for visually representing all the information derived from confusion matrices, such as TPR, TNR, FPR, FNR, PPV, and NPV. These matrices are widely used in credit scoring and biostatistics, among other fields.
He elaborated on the practical applications and benefits of this visual representation technique. Concluding the seminar, Professor Hong emphasized that geometry has been a consistent area of research in statistics and predicted that many more visual statistical analysis methods would be developed in the future.
After the professor's seminar, Professor Dong-uk Kim delivered a plaque of appreciation and a bouquet of flowers as a representative of the participants. Then, the seminar ended with the group photo shoot.
