The Office of Academic Affairs, BK21 Education Research Center of College of Economics, and SKKU Nobel Prize Candidate Sponsorship Committee is holding a special lecture given by Professor Myron Scholes (Stanford University), Nobel Prize Laureate in Economics, on September 7 (Wed) at 10 a.m. in the first conference room of the 600th Anniversary Hall.
The purpose of Sungdae Myeongnyun lecture is to spread the school philosophy of 인의예지 (Benevolence, Righteousness, Propriety, Wisdom) and to produce premium lecture that cultivates the personality of students and leads the education of community spirit by inviting local and international scholars and opening it up to the public.
Scholes is the originator of the Black-Scholes-Merton model and Nobel laureate in Economic Sciences for proposing an innovative model that changed the paradigm of the pricing theory of derivatives. The topic of this special lecture is "The Future of Finance," which begins with a congratulatory speech by Chairman Kim Junyoung. Shortly after the lecture, economists from SKKU including Sunghyun Kim (Dean of College of Economics), Prof. Younghan Kim (College of Economics), and the senior researchers at SKKU’s Economics Research institute, Prof. Robert Webb (University of Virginia), and Prof. Jonathan Batten (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology/Editor-in-chief, Journal of International Financial Markets, Institutions and Money, SSCI) will join the Q&A session. Additionally, undergraduates attending the lecture are also given a chance to ask questions. Any member of our university (students, professors, employees, alumni) can attend the special lecture given by the Nobel Laureate online through Zoom.
Professor Dujin Ryu of the economics department, who organized the event, said, "Robert Merton, the Nobel Prize winner in Economic Sciences, visited Sungkyunkwan University in 2019 to discuss lectures and international cooperation, and the Nobel Laureates’ special lecture, which got canceled due to COVID-19, has restarted now. Our university has invited both Nobel laureates who invented the Black-Scholes-Merton model, the most famous theory in finance and finance (except for late Professor Fisher Black, due to the statutes of the Nobel Committee on posthumous awards). We will continue to support special lectures and research cooperation from scholars abroad, and in particular, we hope that our university students will actively participate to get inspired for the direction of world-class research."
