- 초록: Does algorithmic consumption really make consumers better off? Recent work by Ichihashi and Smolin (2025) shows that platforms can benefit consumers through recommendation algorithms by appropriately pooling low-value and high-value buyers, which induces sellers to post lower prices. When buyers and sellers can opt for an outside mechanism, however, such buyer-optimal recommendation algorithms may fail to be incentive-feasible because high-cost sellers prefer the outside mechanism unless buyers already have full bargaining power. Taking Chatterjee and Samuelson (1983)’s decentralized sealed-offer double auction and Myerson and Satterthwaite (1983)’s centralized budget-balanced trading mechanism as outside mechanisms, we characterize incentive-feasible Pareto-optimal recommendation algorithms and identify when algorithms can genuinely improve consumer surplus.
