Private education made by parents is one of key channels for intergenerational mobility. We analyze the effects of mandatory retirement-age extension on parental investment in education. To focus on the forward-looking effects, we exploit a 2013 announcement by the Korean government to raise the retirement age starting in 2016. This revision applied exclusively to regular wage workers born in 1961 or later, allowing us to implement a difference-in-differences approach. Using representative panel data from Korea that links parents and their children, we find that the announcement significantly increases child-level private education spending by adjusting financial assets, consistent with predictions from our overlapping generation model. A series of robustness checks supports this finding.
