- 주제: Are voters the source of underrepresentation of experienced women politicians? Evidence from Australian state elections
- Abstract: We investigate whether the underrepresentation of senior women politicians in parliaments is attributable to political parties or preferences of voters. Exploiting closely contested electorates in Australian state and territory lower house parliament elections, our regression discontinuity approach shows that parties are equally likely to support male and female incumbents to recontest in the election. However, male incumbents are more likely to win than female incumbents, despite them having similar educational attainment and political experience. As female incumbents are replaced by inexperienced challengers at a higher rate than male incumbents are, the preferences of voters worsen the representation of experienced women politicians.
