- 주제: Intergenerational Educational Mobility in Korea: From Degress to Ranks
- Abstract: This paper investigates intergenerational educational mobility in Korea to better understand the dynamics and determinants of social mobility. Using a relative, rank-based measure constructed from school prestige, rather than final educational attainment, we find that intergenerational educational mobility in Korea is significantly lower than suggested by previous studies. To account for this limited mobility, we examine the role of parental income in shaping access to top-tier universities and show that income disparities increasingly drive entry into elite institutions, thereby reinforcing intergenerational inequality. Empirical evidence further indicates that this income effect operates primarily through private tutoring expenditures.
